The Herpes Simplex Virus Explained

The herpes simplex virus has been an issue that many people are suffering from for many years. It is a condition that can cause sores in the oral and genital areas of the body.

There are two types of this virus, and the symptoms are often minimal or none and that is the reason it is easily transmitted. Let us see what the are two types are and the current situation in finding a cure.

Herpes Simplex Virus Type 01 – Oral Herpes

This type causes sores around the mouth and indie the mouth. It can be rather embarrassing as people can see it and you can get it at times that are unpredictable. There are often no symptoms, and they may only erupt when a person is unclean or under stress. However, the virus can be transmitted easily through an exchange of a kiss where a sore has erupted.

Herpes Simplex Virus Type 02 – Genital Herpes

This form of the virus that is mainly transmitted by sexual contact with an infected person. While in this case too, the symptoms don’t often show up, they can be painful and embarrassing.

A statistic shows that one in five adults and adolescents have had the herpes simplex virus type 2.

The disease is said to be more common in women than in men.

How is the Virus transmitted?

The virus is present and transmitted in the sores that break out on the skin of an infected person. These sores can be found in the genital region for type 2 and in the mouth and oral area with type 2, however, it can be contagious even if the sores cannot be seen.

Often the condition can only be seen by a slight redness or rash in type 2 but in genital herpes can have some nasty lesions in and around the vagina or penis.

For the virus to be transmitted all it takes is skin to skin contact and not sexual contact as many people believe. Due to this situation, it is important that any partners who have the condition inform each other before any physical contact is made.

Treatments and cures

At present, there are no cures for the herpes simplex virus, and therefore, it is a condition that one must live with. There are some treatments that will help in controlling the outbreaks, but this too does no do much as far as the actual contagiousness of the virus is concerned.

If you think you have contracted this virus speak to your medical professional and seek advice immediately.
